Session 89

Dhanteras, Bhoot chaturdoshi, Kalipujo, Diwali... you name it, this week has got it. No wonder our nattily dressed TMOD Shaleen declared the theme to be the incontrovertible one of "Festival Overload". A box of Gupta Brothers laddoo's also mysteriously appeared, waved in by the magic wand of Prez Ashish Baid, who also mysteriously appeared for some time.

Today's attendance was slightly on the thinner side, understandably so, tomorrow being Diwali night. At one point it seemed like the role players would also have to be procured from Gupta Brothers. However, the quorum was met and VPE did not have to emulate our godesses and grow multiple arms for multi-tasking.

Session started a couple of minutes late, which was not frowned upon this time since the frowner-in-chief, the Parliamentarian, was late as well. The stand-in SAA, TM Nitin, did the honours of the non-nos and the welcome to the stand-in Prez.

The session was called to order by TM Rupasree, who related an inspiring story from her own childhood, where doing the maid's work once, showed her that the maid also knows something she does not. We can always learn from everyone. A humbling thought on a day when house cleaning reaches a cresendo.

TMOD Shaleen, in proper festive attire, took us through a few of the festivals of India. He also introduced the speakers with answers to questions he had asked them offline. Near the end of the session, he held a brief mythological quiz, which was much appreciated. A good theme, smooth conduct of session and a festive outfit that would have done justice to the host of Dadagiri... and that's a compliment.

There were two prepared speeches today, both of very different flavours. The first speech by TM Kushal, titled: "Get a Mentor, Get a Life", was on his experience of mentoring. TM Kushal, supported by an efficient slideshow, shared with us the origin of the word Mentor, his two closest mentors and a few of the lessons that the mentors had imparted to him. A very clear speech, scripted unconventionally and with humour, made us all sorry that it ended so soon.

The second speech by TM Avishek Mitra, titled: "You Shouldn't Be Working with Him", was a humorous take on the series of awful bosses that he had endured, managed and finally won over. With script supporting TM Abhishek's theatrical skills, the audience enjoyed the sloshes of mauj-masti till all were practically punch-drunk. A great offering.

After the break, Table topic master TM Rajat took the floor, with a mixture of topics and scenarios. While the topics were standard stuff, the scenario-based speeches were a challenge, mostly given to senior toastmasters, to drag out their imagination and whackiness to the fullest. On the whole, it was an entertaining affair.

The GE, TM Panna, took over for the evaluation session. Speech evaluations were given by TM Rupasree and TM Varun respectively, who appreciated the speeches while giving worthwhile suggestions.

The GE's team - TM Nitin as Timer, TM Mohit as Ah-counter, TM Surya as Grammarian and TM Raunak as Parliamentarian - gave their reports on speech quality and session discipline.

The GE gave an overall feedback on the session and individual feedbacks on the table topic speakers.

The floor was back with the stand-in Prez and all eyes were darting hither and thither in search of the box of laddoos, on which the Prez had imposed President's rule. It was only after the guests had been encouraged, the votes had been cast, the results declared and the group photograph taken did the Gupta Brothers become less 'gupt' and were proffered to the by now hypogycemic members, thus ensuring full attendance till the last word was uttered. Sometimes our Vice Presidents are wise indeed.

The day's results were:
Best role plyer (aux):          TM Mohit (Ah counter)
Best role player (main):      TM Panna (GE)
Best speaker           :           TM Avishek
Best Evaluator:        :          TM Varun
Best TT speaker (member): TM Rupasree
